At The Kingsmead School Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) every young person should be given the opportunity to succeed in their learning and achieve to their potential. Our aim is to prepare them for the future through a broad curriculum, combined with practical, vocational elements.
As a school we have high expectations. We work with pupils from diverse backgrounds with a broad range of needs to help them to re-engage with education and prepare them for re-integration to mainstream school. We aim for every pupil to reach their full potential from both an academic and social/emotional point of view.
We offer a number of different curriculum pathways and experiences. Each of our learners is seen as an individual and support is tailored to meet their needs; this includes 1-2-1 specific interventions in core subjects for those who require that extra input. Staff at Kingsmead PRU are empathetic and understanding, they see potential, and our success rate mirrors their faith in our learners. To enable our students to flourish, we have a strong team designated to support our students regulate their emotions to build resilience and self-esteem.
We make a commitment to our students and never give up on them, to enable them to become the best version of themselves. Alongside our formal curriculum we offer a wider curriculum. The aim of which is to give pupils appropriate life experiences to develop as confident, responsible citizens. It provides a rich ‘cultural capital’ and appreciation of the wider world that prepares our pupils for life in modern Britain.
Libby Macpherson
Assistant Head/Provision Head - Pupil Referral Unit
I’m proud to be a school leader at Kingsmead helping to shape the evolution and growth of the school and its community; establishing an inspiring, rich and varied curriculum for all our pupils.
In my role as Head of Secondary I oversee our Special School, PRU and Hospital Medical School – working closely with the Executive Head Teacher and a dedicated team of Assistant Head Teachers who have operational control of each site.
Kingsmead is a diverse and ambitious school where pupils of all abilities, aptitudes, special needs and social backgrounds thrive and achieve. Pupils currently on roll are from Keystage 3 and 4 and have arrived at the school through a variety of admission routes.
Pupils are at the heart of everything we do, and we aim for every child to enjoy their school experience, while developing the skills, experiences and qualifications to be successful in life. Colleagues at all levels share this vision and work tirelessly to provide a positive learning experience which meets the needs of all our pupils.
Our teaching and holistic support structures allow learning through engaging topics, while pupils who need to be challenged academically can access a broad range of topics delivered by specialists who will help them to achieve high GCSE grades.
At Kingsmead we believe every pupil can, and will, succeed providing the right opportunities are made available. And regardless of admission route or needs we believe that every day is a new day and a fresh start.
