Hospital Medical Provision

Lead of Hospital Welcome

Welcome to Castle Education Centre, Derby City’s Hospital Medical Provision. Castle is located in the centre of Derby City. We also have a dedicated staff team who teach within The Royal Derby Hospital on the Puffin Ward. All education offered through Hospital Medical is run by the Local Authority and managed by The Kingsmead School.

Children and young people work on programmes within the context of the National Curriculum. The work is individually planned and offers the children learning that is appropriate to their age, ability and particular needs while they are in Hospital or at Castle Education Centre.

We work closely with the child’s referring school, their family, other agencies who are supporting the family and the student, to ensure that they get a well rounded and quality education, and that they feel nurtured and supported on their learning journey with us.

Head of Primary and Lead of Hospital Medical

Head of Secondary Welcome

I’m proud to be a school leader at Kingsmead helping to shape the evolution and growth of the school and its community; establishing an inspiring, rich and varied curriculum for all our pupils.

In my role as Head of Secondary I oversee our Special School, PRU and Hospital Medical School – working closely with the Executive Head Teacher and a dedicated team of Assistant Head Teachers who have operational control of each site.

Kingsmead is a diverse and ambitious school where pupils of all abilities, aptitudes, special needs and social backgrounds thrive and achieve. Pupils currently on roll are from Keystage 3 and 4 and have arrived at the school through a variety of admission routes.

Pupils are at the heart of everything we do, and we aim for every child to enjoy their school experience, while developing the skills, experiences and qualifications to be successful in life. Colleagues at all levels share this vision and work tirelessly to provide a positive learning experience which meets the needs of all our pupils.

Our teaching and holistic support structures allow learning through engaging topics, while pupils who need to be challenged academically can access a broad range of topics delivered by specialists who will help them to achieve high GCSE grades.

At Kingsmead we believe every pupil can, and will, succeed providing the right opportunities are made available.  And regardless of admission route or needs we believe that every day is a new day and a fresh start.

Head of Secondary

Empowering poems by two teenagers from Castle Education Centre have been chosen from thousands of others to be published in a poetry book. Kye Purcell Conboy, 16, and Aisha Russell, 15, wrote the poems during an English class with teacher Kat Christopoulos. It was part of the national Young Writers competition with the theme of “empowerment”. The two teenagers chose to spend their class penning the powerful poems, Kye’s called Tired, and Aisha's No. They impressed their teacher so much, she encouraged them to enter them into the competition. “What really impressed me about these poems were how Kye and Aisha managed to express so much in so few words,” said Ms Christopoulos. “Their choice of words and how they played with poetic language was so clever and the finished poems were both powerful and moving. I am so proud of them.” The poetry anthology, called Empowered, has now been published and is available online. Kye said: “I hope that at least one person picks up the book and decides to start writing because of it.”

Several of our key stage three  Castle Education Centre students enjoyed a recent cultural trip to Derby Museum and Art Gallery.  The visit was a a huge success – they had a lot of fun and learned a great deal.
