Careers Morning

We had a really successful whole school Careers/Mock Interview morning on Friday. Year 11 students from Bridge Street, Firs, Wisgreaves and Southgate all attended. The students did themselves and the school proud. Many of them came in their best clothes, self-conscious, nervous and worried, but with the help of all the staff and interviewers they behaved really well and had several interviews with feedback.

Cloughie’s Groundsman Goes Back to School

Bob Smith, a former head groundsman at Derby County’s Baseball Ground, who prepared the pitch during the Rams’ glory years of the 1970s, recently returned to his former school, our Southgate base, to thank staff for cultivating his love of gardening.

Bob started working at the Baseball Ground in 1967, the same year that managerial duo Peter Taylor and Brian Clough took the helm. On his return to Southgate Bob gave a talk to the students about his career and also took a tour of the building.

Digital Media Studies

Since the beginning of this academic year, in Digital Media, Year 11’s have been focusing on studying various subject themes and aspects in photography ranging from nature, macro, landscapes, architecture and sights around Derby.

These mushroom images were taken at Allestree Park as part of their nature theme which focused on light, macro and form.

Motorcycle Live!

In December 2015 a small group of students from Southgate Education Centre attended the Motorcycle Live Show at the NEC.  They had the opportunity to see and sit on the latest bikes from all the major manufacturers, watch a live stunt show and learn about career opportunities in the motorcycle industry.  The pupils enjoyed themselves and their behaviour was excellent!

Trip to Chatsworth House

Before half-term, seven of our year 11 students went to Chatsworth House to see an exhibition called ‘Beyond Limits’, which was a collection of sculptures from Sotherbys. The students have studied sculptors such as Barbara Hepworth  for their GCSE in Art and Design and really enjoyed seeing artwork in such a beautiful setting. The students were engaged in the guide tour we had; listened well and asked questions about the work as we were shown a variety of different styles of work and different materials. Staff and students had a great day and the students were a real credit to the school. V. Craig
